WHAT IS WAM?
Welcoming Allies and Mentors is a program with a dual mission. One is to provide new students with a mentor who will form a friendship, provide support and education, and ease the new student’s transition to LACS. The other is to train the mentors and the mentees how to be helpful bystanders in situations of bias, harassment, or bullying. The major feature of WAM that separates it from other programs, is that it is orchestrated largely by students. HOW IT
HOW IT WORKS:
Each year a CORE TEAM of students (10-12) become the task group. It is their responsibility to review surveys, make programmatic changes based on feedback, and design and implement the training of new mentors and orientation of new students. The following year they will be responsible for the weekly teaching and training of the new mentors as well as providing mini courses for new students. This will happen once a week for the first half of the year during committee time.
The plan for WAM is to make it sustainable so that students will increasingly take ownership for planning, development and implementation of the program from year to year. Students volunteer to become WAM mentors and receive community service credit.
